What Telegram Requires at Sign-Up
A mobile phone number is the single mandatory credential Telegram uses to identify every account. Landlines are not supported. There is no email sign-up option and no username-only path. WhatsApp also requires a number to register; see whether WhatsApp works without a number.
According to the Telegram FAQ, the platform uses phone numbers as unique identifiers. The Telegram Privacy Policy explains the design choice: tying accounts to phone numbers makes it easy to switch from SMS and other messaging apps and keep your social graph. For background on the service itself, see Telegram’s Wikipedia entry.
Usernames exist on Telegram and are public-facing, but they are set after account creation, not instead of a number. They make you findable and messageable without exposing your number, but they do not replace the number at registration.
Options for Using Telegram Without Your Own Number
Two realistic paths exist, and they solve different problems. Fragment anonymous numbers let you avoid giving a personal SIM entirely. Telegram’s privacy settings keep your personal number hidden from other users after you have already signed up with it. Decide which problem you are solving before reading further.
Fragment Anonymous Numbers (Official No-SIM Option)
Since 6 December 2022, Telegram has offered sign-up without a SIM card, using blockchain-powered anonymous numbers available on Fragment. Telegram introduced it as No-SIM Signup in its own announcement, and the page on anonymous numbers for Telegram covers it in more detail.
How it works:
- Get a blockchain-powered anonymous number on Fragment (all Fragment transactions rely on TON).
- During Telegram sign-up, enter the anonymous number instead of a personal mobile number.
- The login code isn’t sent by SMS: you see it on the Fragment website after logging in there with your wallet.
- Enter the code in the Telegram app to complete sign-up.
Pro tip: Keep access to the wallet you use with Fragment. Outside an active Telegram session, that wallet login is how you see the code for an anonymous number.
Trade-off: Fragment numbers involve a crypto purchase and wallet management. If that friction is too high, a separate mobile number is simpler.
Hiding Your Personal Number After Sign-Up
If you have already signed up with your personal number and want to prevent other users from seeing it, Telegram’s privacy settings cover most scenarios. By default, only people you saved as contacts can see your number.
- Open Telegram and go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Phone Number.
- Set Who Can See My Phone Number to Nobody.
- A second option then appears: Who Can Find Me By My Number. Setting this to My Contacts means random users who add your number can’t match it to your profile.
Common mistake: Changing this setting does not affect people who already saved your number in their contacts before you changed it.
What Stays at Risk Without a Verified Number
Whether you use a Fragment anonymous number or a separate mobile number, the account recovery risk is the same: if you lose access to the number tied to your account and are not already logged in on another device, recovering the account becomes extremely difficult.
Telegram sends login codes to the registered number, or to an active Telegram session on another device. Codes received inside the app only work when you still have an active session somewhere — they are not a substitute for having an up-to-date number on file.
Fragment numbers carry the same risk: without an active Telegram session, the code for an anonymous number is shown only on the Fragment website after you log in there with your wallet.
Login codes must never be shared with anyone. The FTC’s alert on verification code scams explains why: handing a code to someone else hands them your account.
Practical recommendation: Stay logged in on at least one trusted device at all times. If your number changes, update it in Telegram before you lose access to the old one.
When Fragment Doesn’t Suit You: A Second Mobile Number
For users unwilling to use their personal number and for whom Fragment is not suitable, a second mobile number is the practical fallback. The guide to using a virtual number for Telegram covers that route in more depth.
What Works: Non-VoIP Mobile Lines
A Telegram account can only be connected to a mobile number, so the separate number should be a line carriers classify as mobile (non-VoIP): a standard SIM, a prepaid SIM or a carrier-issued eSIM. Any US or Australian mobile number that isn’t VoIP-based works with all services. A virtual number qualifies as well, provided carriers class the line as mobile and not VoIP.
| Number Type | Carrier Classification | Works for Sign-Up | Login Code Delivery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal SIM (mobile) | Mobile / non-VoIP | Yes | SMS, or inside Telegram if logged in elsewhere |
| Prepaid SIM | Mobile / non-VoIP | Yes | SMS, or inside Telegram if logged in elsewhere |
| eSIM (carrier-issued) | Mobile / non-VoIP | Yes | SMS, or inside Telegram if logged in elsewhere |
| Fragment anonymous number | Blockchain-powered | Supported (official) | Shown on the Fragment website after wallet login |
| VoIP / online number | VoIP | Often refused | — |
| Public receive-SMS number | Shared, public | Often refused | Visible to anyone |
What to Avoid: Public Receive-SMS Numbers
Public receive-SMS numbers — listed on free online SMS sites — are often refused, and anyone can read a code sent to them.
Common mistake: Treating a public receive-SMS number as your own. Even when a code arrives, anyone can read it, and you won’t control that number later if you need it to get the account back.
Adding Contacts Without Sharing Your Number
Once your account exists, Telegram offers several ways to connect without your number appearing.
1. Set a public username. Usernames are optional and public: people can find you in search and message you without knowing your number. Only letters a–z, digits 0–9, and underscores are allowed.
2. Share a temporary QR code. Temporary QR codes let people add you as a contact without knowing your number.
3. Chat in groups without showing your number. With your phone number privacy set, you can message people in private chats and groups without showing it — though anyone who already saved your number will still see it.
These methods work best combined with the phone number privacy settings described earlier.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Telegram with absolutely no phone number at all? No. Every Telegram account requires a number at creation. The closest alternative is a blockchain-powered anonymous number from Fragment; its login code is shown on the Fragment website, not sent by SMS.
Is it safe to use a Fragment anonymous number for Telegram? It depends on how securely you manage your crypto wallet. The login code is shown on the Fragment website after you log in there with your wallet rather than sent by SMS, so wallet security becomes account security. A lost or compromised wallet creates the same recovery difficulty as a lost SIM.
Can I recover my Telegram account if I no longer have access to the registered number? Getting the account back needs access to the number or to Telegram on another device. If you are still logged in elsewhere, work from that session; without either, the account is effectively inaccessible.
How do I add someone on Telegram without sharing my phone number? Share your username or a temporary QR code. Both let the other person start a conversation without seeing your number, provided your privacy settings are configured to hide it.
Why won’t Telegram accept my number? A Telegram account can only be connected to a mobile number, and landlines aren’t supported. Online/VoIP numbers often get refused, and so do shared numbers from public receive-SMS sites. A non-VoIP mobile number such as a prepaid SIM is the reliable choice, especially one issued in the US or Australia.
